My Review:
How do I even begin to review Melissa Toppen’s latest novel, The Road to You? I will began with informing you that shamefully, this is my first time reading anything by this amazing author. I don’t know how, but I’ve never read any of her novels. That will now change my friends.
The Road to You is an outstanding story about two young teenagers Kam and Elara that meet one summer and become the best of friends. It takes them years to admit that they have stronger feelings than “just friends,” however, one day, everything changes. There is also Kam’s older brother Kane. Elara has always found him dark and sad, but soon she realizes the light that Kane brings to the world, changing everything once again.
Once again, I’ve found myself struggling to write a review for a novel due to my innate fear of giving any spoilers away! Elara was a fabulous character that was so full of life as she was growing up, despite losing her mother at an early age. She was carefree, a risk taker, and a very loyal friend. Kam was also extremely sweet and caring, although more careful and reserved than Elara.Kane was initially a mystery. When Elara and Kam met, Kane was already in college and then later began a consulting career that required a lot of travel, which didn’t allow Kane and Elara to really get to know one another at all.
The Road to You is a novel that will touch on all of your emotions. It’s happy, sad, funny, somber, and at times- beautifully frustrating. Themes of this novel include first love, coming of age, dealing with guilt and grief, taking chances, and dealing with the hand that life deals us. I went from laughing to crying to smiling several times while reading, but my overall feeling was a full and happy heart.
Melissa Toppen has created a beautiful story about love and loss that I was unable to put down. Kam, Elara, and Kane’s story is not one that I will soon forget, and I cannot recommend this incredible novel enough! Kudos to the author for a novel with such raw emotion.
