My Review:
Today is my review of Kim Karr’s latest release, Come a Little Closer. This novel is about Sadie – recently fired, constantly in the wrong place at the wrong time, good girl turned criminal, and Jaxson (Sundance) – the sexy, talented photographer that becomes her victim, or at least he was supposed to be. Sadie’s had a rough life full of secrets and Jaxson has decided to take on new challenges and experiences since his ex-fiance remarried. After these two meet, a roller-coaster ride of emotions begins.
Typically, I don’t look at other reviews of another novel until I have written my own review, but this is one of those circumstances where I couldn’t resist. According to Goodreads, most people absolutely loved this novel. There are things about it that I also loved, but I don’t think my enthusiasm is as strong as the majority of readers. Wonder why?
Jaxson/Sundance is the main reason that I loved this novel. He’s hot, sexy, talented, and honestly, I’m into photography myself so there was a common bond. Although he takes on quite a few alpha qualities throughout the novel, on the inside he’s basically a big teddy bear of love. I love that he took a chance on Sadie and decided to trust her, resulting in him helping her, getting to know her, and so on.
Which brings me to Sadie… I refuse to include spoilers but for the majority of the novel, the reader is aware of several dishonest, immoral, disturbing things that Sadie has done. Not saying that my own moral character mirrors that of Mother Teresa, however, I was completely unable to invest in her character because of early events in the novel. Moreover, after finishing this one, my reflections about Sadie brought me to the conclusion that she is not impressively smart, a pushover, and was willing to offer up her body as repentance whether she chose to admit it or not. In summary, I was not a fan of her. However – let me give props to the author for her character development within her writing. It’s not often that I dislike characters as much as I disliked Sadie, but I have to stop and applaud the author for creating and developing a character so detailed that she was able to get under my skin the way she did. It was probably not the intention, but I give props where due whenever a character really touches me, whether in a positive or negative way.
On a more positive note, author Kim Karr created a suspenseful novel that evoked several emotions in me while reading, drew me in, and kept me reading to find out more. I was able to guess a lot of the big secrets prior to the reveal, nevertheless, I found myself reading on, excitedly waiting for the resolution of this story. If it weren’t for Sadie and the emotional trainwreck that she was, I would have given this a 5-star rating, but because she bothered me so much, I can only rate this as o.k.
