Allie Mendes is the good daughter, who’s spent her life living in her perfect sister’s shadow. But when her sister steals the man Allie was supposed to marry, that shadow she’s lived in threatens to swallow her whole. Allie wants to believe a bright future awaits. But when she begs God to save her from this disastrous twist of fate, the last person she expects Him to send her is Seamus O’Brien.
Allie needs a stand-in boyfriend to avoid appearing as lonely as she feels. Seamus needs a decent woman without an ankle bracelet or a rap sheet as long as his muscular arms. The two make a deal to pose as each other’s perfect date. But weddings mean romance and a chance at forever neither had planned.
My Review:
I am ashamed to say that this is my first time reading Cecy Robson and any of the O’Brien Family novels. However, I can eagerly announce that I am now a huge fan! I had no idea what to expect from Seamus and Alie’s story, but fell in love with them, as well as, the rest of Seamus’ family.
Seamus is being pressured to date a “nice girl” and settle down, whereas, Allie is reeling with her emotions regarding her “perfect,” model sister marrying the man that Allie used to love. Seizing the opportunity to save one another, Allie and Seamus become what appears to be a couple, having no idea what kind of feelings and emotions could come to light down the road.
To be honest, Seamus initially seemed to be an arrogant pig going through women like he did his underwear and not thinking twice about it. Then there was Allie.. She was beautiful, successful, smart… But she sort of hid herself with her understated clothing and a very submissive personality. I loved watching them both change for the better, enhancing themselves and their own lives, however, I didn’t like Allie’s low opinion of herself or the way Seamus immediately chose to make her over to make her desirable to me and make it seem realistic that he would be with her.
I always think to myself that I have encountered fantastic writing when the author’s characterization enables me to absolutely despise a villain in the story. Cecy Robson definitely takes the cake with that one and her creation of Allie’s sister, Valentina. Actually, also Allie’s mother. Anyway, Valentina was one of the most frustrating, anger-inducing character that I’ve encountered in recent memory, making me want to choke her and slap Allie for tolerating her. Luckily, Allie eventually found some spark. However, between the abuse she received from her family and Seamus wanting to change her hair, make-up, and wardrobe, I didn’t find her to be a strong character.
Despite my criticism of Allie’s character, I truly loved this novel. Watching the friendship develop and change (both ups and downs) between Seamus and Allie was a fantastic journey that I am happy to have read. Although I already know the outcome of his brothers’ stories, I definitely plan on going back and reading the earlier novels in this series!
