Love.

They say it’s blind.
That you don’t choose who you fall in love with.
They say it creeps up on you when you least expect it.
They say it doesn’t let go.

I wish it were that easy.

I’ve been in love before, and it happened the way they said it would.
For a while, it was easy and full of bliss.
Until he uttered those damn three words, and all hell broke loose.

I don’t blame him for leaving.
Love is a beast, waiting to devour you at the first sign of weakness.
That’s what they don’t say.

It’s been four years and a lot has changed.
I never expected to see Jake again,
but here I am, staring into those gorgeous eyes like they still belong to me.

See, I’m Finley May Norwood, the girl who pushes love away when it becomes too much.
Now, Jake’s engaged to someone else, and I’m too late.
If only my heart could accept that.
It simply doesn’t.
Love. Be damned.

My Review:

Welcome to my stop on the release blitz tour for D. Nichole King’s new novel, The Evolution of Us. If you have read The Story of Us, then you will be familiar with most of the characters, but this time the focus is on Finley and her journey of coming to terms with her heart and learning to focus on the present and the future, rather than the past.

Finley is a young, beautiful woman that does not love her job, only does casual sex, and basically, the only things she enjoys is babysitting her godson and enjoying the coffee that her co-worker Ty brings to her desk each day. She still hasn’t gotten over Jake, even though it’s been 4 years since she pushed him away and broke his heart. Their best friends, Maverick and Aleiya, don’t keep Finley clued in as to what is going on in Jake’s life, but then she is suddenly standing face to face with him when she has to go process a claim where his car had been vandalized. The same sparks are still there between Jake and Finley, however, Jake is now engaged to someone else.

I loved Finley in The Story of Us and loved her even more in The Evolution of Us. There were many things about her that were the same, however, Finley’s character really grew in this novel and she had much more depth than I realized. I also enjoyed Jake’s character again, the playful banter between them, and the obvious love that he still felt for her. However – I was not very fond of his situation and how he went about things! I’m not going to give spoilers, so I’ll just say that I wish he would’ve handled things differently from the first moment that he and Finley reunited.

Ty was a wonderful and refreshing surprise in this novel and he completely stole my heart. He was unique, funny, honest, caring, and the list goes on. Most importantly, he somehow got Finley to open her eyes, let go of her past, and focus on a happy future.

The Evolution of Us embraces the topic of love and serves as a reminder that we can have many great loves in our lives, but not all of them end up in wedded bliss and a happily-ever-after. Finley was so regretful of her past with Jake and was so wrapped up in falling for him all over again, that she almost missed out on future happiness. I loved this book and didn’t want to put it down. I highly recommend this one, but make sure that you read The Story of Us first just so you’ll get a better back story on Finley and Jake.

Author Bio
I’m pretty sure I drink too much Pepsi. I’m also pretty sure that somedays it’s what keeps me sane. Well, Pepsi and writing, that is.
I’m a dreamer, an inspirer. I find beauty in weakness, brokenness, and heartbreak. In life, and joy, and happiness. These moments don’t define us, but the choices we
make in these moments do.
I write about these moments. About the choices we make and the paths we tread. About the circumstances that make us who we are and the experiences that will lead us to who we will become.
I write about life. Love. Pain. And hope.
