My Review

Fading into Nothing is the new release from Kelly Moore that deals with addiction, life, death, and “what if?” This is the story of seventeen-year-old Mags and her brother Phillip (Lip) and the night that everything goes wrong. Years later, Mags has gotten a degree in elementary education and is on her way to a small coastal town in North Carolina when she meets a man named Will on the train. For reasons she doesn’t even understand herself, Mags takes a detour on her trip, heading to Savannah with Will. Call it fate, destiny, whatever you want, but that moment changes everything in Mags’ life.

Let me start by saying that I have read this novel several times already, yet each time I notice new things that make me love it all the more. Typical of Kelly Moore, the characters are beautifully complex and flawed, while still appealing and relatable. Mags experiences a tremendous loss at the beginning of the novel and when we meet her again years later, she has made great achievements towards her career, yet still seems reserved, quietly battling inner demons and ghosts. However, upon meeting the charismatic and outgoing Will, I slowly noticed Mags coming out of her shell and experiencing life and joy for the first time.

Fading into Nothing is difficult to categorize, however, I would say that it’s mix of romance, coming of age, fantasy and suspense. That may sound like somewhat of an odd combination, but Kelly Moore has provided readers with the gift of a fresh and unique plot, sensational writing, and a thoughtful and stirring plot making the novel impossible to put down. This is not a smooth or straightforward romance where boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after. If you enjoy a good plot twist, I assure you that this novel includes some shockers that you will never see coming. Prepare for your jaw to hit the floor once or twice during this novel, but rest assured that Moore will wrap everything up into a marvelous conclusion.

Fading into Nothing is comprised of so many different themes and touches on numerous emotions. Some of the events are painful and heartbreaking, but overall, this novel speaks of love, life, starting again, and second chances. It is sad, romantic, uplifting, surprising, and magical – all at once. Kelly Moore continues to amaze and inspire me with the creativity and passion she puts into her writing. Fading into Nothing is yet another example of what a phenomenal writer she is, as well as, her continued commitment to wowing her readers.
