What could be more terrifying than falling in love with the person who is your good place? Maybe realizing just a smidge too late that there can be dire consequences to becoming your best friend’s lover.
The lives of Keir Stevens and Selene Georgiou serendipitously collide mid-span on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, one jarring step ahead of fate. He’s a temporary transplant from Seattle; she’s facing the biggest career opportunity of her life. They have no notion of the common thread that connects them.
As they come to discover they share a similar adversity, their relationship evolves from a fun and frivolous infatuation with nowhere to go into a true friendship with sincerity, humor, and respect at its heart.
It’s awfully hard not to fall in love with that – even if you’re pretty darn certain you shouldn’t.
But when love and friendship suffer their own devastating collision – their interests brutally conflicting – the consequences of blurring the lines between the two suddenly become real. In the end, which one will be the stronger? And more importantly, can either survive?
AFTER EFFECTS is a standalone dual POV adult contemporary romance about the things we choose in life out of all the things that are beyond our choosing – a tale of love and friendship, of time and how we spend it, and of the inner wars that ultimately show us what really matters.
*My Review*
Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for L. J. Greene’s Aftereffects. This is the third novel in her Ripple Effects series, however, no worries if you are new to the series because it is a stand-alone (I haven’t read books 1 or 2 and it had no impact on my enjoyment of the novel). This is the story of Keir and Selena whose lives literally collide one morning on the Golden Gate Bridge as she is rushing to an important meeting at work. Keir has a successful food truck/catering business out of Seattle but is in town for some family issues. A close friendship begins to form between the two despite Keir traveling back and forth between Seattle until eventually, they realize that their feelings have developed into much more. Keir and Selena ultimately find themselves torn between attempting a long-distance relationship or simply preserving their friendship.
Oh, let me tell you how much I love Keir! Sexy, funny, nurturing, driven, talented, intelligent – the list goes on and on. Don’t get me wrong, Selena is a fantastic lead character, but my heart belonged to Keir before the end of the first chapter. Anyway, the plot of friends to lovers, maybe more, maybe it won’t work, and so on isn’t exactly a new one. However, I absolutely loved, adored and devoured this novel.
Both main characters are successful, smart, sexy, funny, and personable in a very realistic and down-to-earth way. Once you start reading this, you’ll realize that these characters good be any of your friends. They’re real with just as many faults as admirable qualities, and these two just instantly click. I loved their effortless familiarity, as well as, their numerous romantic and steamy moments.
Was there anything I didn’t love? Unfortunately, yes. My only issue with the novel at all was Selena. She goes through some serious stress in this novel, but sometimes I couldn’t keep up with her quick shifts between being independent and being overly clingy. In no way did this ruin the book for me and I love that the author’s writing made Selena’s conflict feel so real. However, there were times that she drove me crazy.
Regardless of that small issue, this is a fantastic and romantic novel. If you enjoy friends to lovers novels that are interlaced with themes regarding career/family/personal life balance, then you will love Keir and Selena’s story. Along with the realistic characters, this is such a relatable story that provides a fabulous fictional escape while still playing out like anyone’s normal life. I truly loved this one and cannot wait to read more from author L.J. Greene in the future!
